p&g: P&G names Sundar Raman as CEO of its fabric and home care

Procter & Gamble has elevated Sundar Raman as the global chief executive of the company’s fabric and home care division, which has brands such as Ariel and Tide. He succeeds Shailesh Jejurikar will took over as chief operating officer at Procter & Gamble (P&G) month as part of a global succession plan, and joined the growing league of Indians at the helm of global consumer firms.

The world’s biggest consumer goods maker on Thursday said India has been a talent factory for P&G globally and one of the largest exporters of top talent to P&G globally. “The company has approximately 350 Indian expats in roles across the company with the recent being Shailesh Jejurikar becoming the first Indian to be elevated to COO of the company,” the statement added.

He is responsible for delivering top- and bottom-line growth through innovation (R&D), a synchronized E2E supply chain, brand-building and sales.

He has earned his degree in electrical and electronics engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (1996) and a post-graduate diploma from Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (1998). Raman began his career as a market analyst in India in 1998 from campus and soon moved to the United States where he worked in a variety of roles from business intelligence to marketing, in P&G Beauty. In 2008, he joined North America fabric care to lead innovation and marketing, and in 2019 was appointed president fabric care North America and P&G Professional, expanding his responsibilities to global home care in 2020

“A visionary leader with broad expertise and a passion for innovation, Sundar was involved in the launch of new products such as Tide Pods and Downy Unstoppables. He also leads Equality Inclusion for Fabric Home Care reflecting his passion for diversity, inclusion and the company’s Citizenship agenda,” P&G said.

The elevation of Indian executives, many with stints in the local unit, reflects the increasing importance of the country for multinationals as markets in the West hit a plateau. India particularly is an important destination for these companies, given its prime demographics and faster population growth. Two years ago, P&G’s rival Unilever elevated Nitin Paranjpe as its global chief operating officer. Its India unit chairman Sanjiv Mehta was also appointed as president of South Asia and a member of the Unilever Leadership Executive (ULE).
