Twitter appoints compliance officers in accordance with India IT Rules

Bengaluru: Twitter has appointed a chief compliance officer, nodal officer and resident grievance officer for India, according to the IT ministry’s affidavit filed with the Delhi High Court.

The appointments are in compliance with the new Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

According to the affidavit, Twitter has acknowledged that the personnel are employees of the social media firm and not contingent workers. These employees started work in August.

The government reinforced that Twitter must comply with all the new rules. “I submit that the IT Rules, 2021, is a law of the land. Twitter is mandatorily required to comply with the IT Rules 2021 in its entirety,” the affidavit read. It added that any non-compliance amounts to a breach of the provisions of the India IT Rules and would lead to Twitter losing its immunity conferred under the Act against offending content.

In July, the Delhi High Court
had given Twitter one week’s time as the “last opportunity” to comply with the new IT Rules.
